Objectives
- Reflect on God’s faithfulness to provide for His creation: especially His children.
- Describe what it looks like to seek the Kingdom of Heaven and all righteousness.
- Recognize the destructive results of worry; worry breeds self-reliance and distraction from Kingdom values.
Key Passage
Matthew 6:25-34
Summary
The introduction of Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount,” explained who the subjects of Jesus’ kingdom were and why they needed true righteousness.
In chapter 5, Jesus looked at passages from the Old Testament Law to provide specific examples of what life in his Kingdom looks like.
In the beginning of chapter 6, Jesus is more specifically addressing prominent misconceptions of Jewish worship practices.
Now, at the end of chapter 6 and on into chapter 7, Jesus is showing how his disciples can seek righteousness while living in this world. In 6:25-34, Jesus is particularly showing how his disciples can prioritize valuing and serving His Kingdom instead of being distracted by worries of earthly provision and what the future holds.
Sample Questions
Feel free to use or reword the questions below that you think will be most helpful to meet the objectives above. Remember, these questions should ultimately cultivate discussion of ways to respond to or apply what the Holy Spirit has revealed to us through Scripture.
- In what ways does worrying distracts us from pursuing God’s kingdom?
- Where does your mind go when it wanders, and what does that say about what you are pursuing?
- Can you recall a time when you experienced supernatural provision?
- What experiences in your life lead you to want to rely on yourself instead of The Lord?
Sample Responses
We stress and are anxious when we forget who God is, has been, and will be. When we declare who God is, we are reminded that he is faithful and can be trusted. Spend time, either in smaller groups or as a whole, confessing areas in which you are feeling anxious then take time to pray over these attributes:
God’s Compassion: God cares His children and acts on their behalf.
God’s Generosity: God gives what is best and beyond what is deserved.
God’s Goodness: God is what is best and gives what is best.
