Welcome to week 3 of The Well’s Torah reading plan! We are finishing up the book of Genesis this week with chapters 37-50!
You can find and download the Week 3 Read-Along Guide here and the Genesis 37-50 Reflection Page here!
New Tips
Some great literary elements to make note of while you listen to or read the text are names and characteristics of God. Wayne Grudem explains,
“In the Bible a person’s name is a description of his or her character. Likewise, the names of God in Scripture are various descriptions of his character. In a broad sense, then God’s ‘name’ is equal to all that the Bible and creation tell us about God.” (Systematic Theology, pg. 157)
Some examples in Genesis are “God Most High,” “a God of seeing,” and “God Almighty” (genesis 14:20, 16:13 & 17:1). Names such as these might come from God revealing them about himself, such as “I am God Almighty.” Also, bible translations might use capital letters to recognize them as proper nouns.
Reminders
The Read-Along Guide has notes, questions, literary elements and prayers written throughout it. This guide is not exhaustive, but was created to assist you while you engage Scripture with the hopes of modeling what it looks like to do an in-depth study of a passage. Feel free to print off this guide and mark it up with your own observations and questions!
The Reflection Page is a short document that provides some basic questions, themes, and a prayer to assist you in your study of the passage. This resource was designed to give you a quick overview of the passage to help get you started! This version is especially helpful if you like to listen to the Scripture aloud on the YouVersion app.
Both guides were designed to be tools for you, but our main hope is that you will engage Scripture in a way that is best for you! You can use these resources together, separate, or not at all, but we pray that you’ll be encouraged as you engage the grand narrative of the gospel!
For further study of the passage we highly recommend The Bible Project and The ESV Study Bible, as well as our general bible-study guide called How to Let the Bible Read You.
